The Secret to Shooting for $1,000 an Hour

Is it really possible to earn $1,000 an hour as a photographer? A regular photographer. Not the kind of high-end fashion photographer or Vogue cover-shooter that requires a lifetime of career achievement and first-name terms with media moguls. The kind of photography for which there’s constant demand, whose buyers are average Joes and which can still deliver the kinds of rates that even lawyers would be frightened to demand.

When we first asked this question back in 2007, the post became one of our most controversial. But what surprised us most about the dozens of comments we’ve received since publishing the article was the number of people who came out in support. “Yes,” they said. “It is possible to make $1,000 an hour as a photographer — and more. I’ve done it.”

The original claim had come from Chris Wunder, a photographer with more than 30 years’ experience who now sells workshops with the claim that it’s possible to make $8,000 a day doing school photography. The key, he says, is the number of portrait jobs available in schools and the speed with which photographers can get through them.

“Experienced photographers with an assistant can do a great job in only 30-40 seconds per student,” he explained to us then. “I normally budget about 90 students per camera per hour.”

Mall Photography on Steroids

That doesn’t leave any room for creativity; it’s mall photography on steroids. Students sit, smile, wait for the snap then make way for the next in line. According to Wunder though, the portraits sell for $24-$25 each with a typical take up rate by parents of between 70 and 80 percent. Ninety students an hour over eight hours is 720 portraits a day. If 70 percent of those portraits sell for $24 then total revenue for the day would be $12,096. Divided by eight hours that works out at revenues of $1,512 per hour — 50 percent higher than even the eyebrow-raising sums claimed in Chris Wunder’s marketing material.

And yet, some photographers greeted those figures not with a scoff but a shrug.

“Jon,” a glassblower who had worked as a school photographer for six years, reported that he had generated over $70,000 a week, shooting 30 weeks a year for a company called “Quality color GMBH.”
“Being 19 I had no idea what a cush job I had,” he said.

His description didn’t make the work sound very cushy. After spending a day shooting 700-900 “bratty kids” in a day (a rate in line with Chris Wunder’s estimate), he would then photograph their baby siblings after school for three times the amount. Shooting would finish at 9pm, after which he would drive to the next location, reaching the hotel around midnight. Often, the hotel would have given away his room by then and he would have to sleep in the van.

At the end of the week, he would head back to the lab so that the “Saturday lab woman” could print the images ready for shipping on Monday. The income from each enrolled child was $18.70 and the median package was $23.95.

“That means that if there were 1,500 kids enrolled in your school we could expect to bring in $28,000 in the 2 days I was at your school,” ‘Jon’ commented. “Plus there would be 50-60 babies out of that 1,500 kids and each of those were worth $50.”

Too Good to Be True

“Jon” wasn’t the only one endorsing Chris Wunder’s figures. Rick Poole of HyperFoto Photography in Seattle had been in the event and school photography business for eleven years. He commented that he was generating $3 million a year.

It all sounds wonderful… and too good to be true, as many other commenters were quick to point. The biggest problem was that the figures that Chris Wunder — and others — quoted were revenues, not profits. The costs would cut into those figures deeply. Processing the image can be done quickly, especially if the photographer is able to get the portrait right in camera, but would add some time to the 30-40 seconds needed to photograph the student. Printing costs money, as does travel to the school, and accommodation if the photographer is traveling a long way and doesn’t want to sleep in a van. Schools charge their own fees, a kickback that Chris Wunder himself notes starts at 10 percent of revenues in the Midwest, rising to as much as 40-50 percent in the southeast.

Add on the price of equipment and throw in the cost of staff — school photographers need to shoot in teams to keep the children organized and the shoot flowing smoothly; even Chris Wunder talks of having an assistant — and it’s no wonder that even “Jon” was seeing only $1,000-$2,000 a week of the $50,000-$70,000 he was generating for his company.

And if $8,000 a month sounds good, bear in mind that to earn that money “Jon” would have to spend long periods away from home, sleeping in a van and working twelve-hour shifts. Nor would he work the whole year. If he worked 30 weeks out of 52, he would still have made only $60,000. While that might be respectable and give him time to add to his income, few photographers with families would want to work those kinds of hours for long.

The answer to the question of whether it’s possible to make $1,000 an hour shooting something as simple as school photography is that it is possible. It is possible to generate that amount in revenues but if you’re shooting for a company, you’ll be paid a relatively low salary while the firm takes whatever is left of the profits after deducting other costs. And if you’re doing it for yourself, you’ll struggle hard to get your foot in the door and you’ll have to make do with whatever is left after you’ve fed the school and paid for your assistants.

Whenever you’re faced with giant revenue claims, it pays to be skeptical, especially if they’re coming from someone selling a course. But it doesn’t pay to dismiss them. There is (still) a lot of money in school photography and while your profits might not $1,000 an hour, the reason that school photography still exists is that photographers can make money out of it.

How I made $1000 per hour

A morning in Switzerland

I walked through security at Zurich Airport without a hitch.

Twenty minutes later, I stepped onto a plane headed for Philadelphia with more than $9000 in my pocket.

I received that $9000 for 9 hours of work.

The whole 6–part process went down like this:

1. I spent one hour researching a topic.
2. I spent the next 2 hours writing.
3. I spent 5 hours revising.
4. I submitted the finished paper and waited.
5. Two months later, I was notified that I had been chosen to receive the 1st place prize at the 40th St. Gallen Symposium in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
6. In May, I spent an hour on stage presenting and answering questions and received a total of $9355.63 for my efforts.

That comes out to $1039.51 per hour.

How long is 9 hours?

It’s going to be awhile before I get paid at that rate again, and it will probably be awhile before you get paid like that too.

Why? Because what I put together in those 9 hours took years to develop.

I wrote a compelling essay because I used a great real world example.

I met a compelling entrepreneur because I took a challenging class.

I knew about that class because I attended a good MBA program.

I was only allowed into a good MBA program because I worked my tail off in undergrad.

I found things that were important to me because I tried 100 other things that were boring before that.

I tried a bunch of boring things because I didn’t know what I wanted to do.

Stop.

Did you catch that? I was paid $1000 per hour because I didn’t know what I wanted to do…

and I did something about it.

Was I just lucky?

You better believe it. I have amazing luck. I’m lucky to simply have the opportunity to focus on all of the things I just mentioned instead of more serious issues like starvation, crime, and war.

But if you’re reading this site, it’s unlikely that you worry about those things either, so for us luck isn’t something that just gets dished out at random.

You can’t control when someone decides to give you a break, but you can create more chances for it to happen. There are plenty of cliches – fortune favors the bold, luck is where preparation meets opportunity, and so on – but the truth is that those who take action give themselves more opportunities to be lucky.

I was lucky, but I also worked hard to create opportunities for things to fall my way. It didn’t take me 9 hours. It took me years.

So how do you make $1000 an hour? Nobody just makes $1000 an hour all of a sudden.

Get moving. Get out there and actually try to earn more. Try something you might hate. Start freelancing. Use some extra cash to build your first product. Do something.

On Billing Over $1,000 an Hour: ‘If You Can Get it, Get It’

Unemployment’s at 9 percent. States are slashing theirbudgets. Twenty-somethings with newly minted JDs are tending bar, not to clients.

Still, as the WSJ’s Vanessa O’Connellreports Wednesday, a group of law-firm lawyers isn’t feeling the effects of the recession one whit.

Some big machers in the U.S. are asking as much as $1,250 an hour, significantly more than in previous years, taking advantage of big clients’ willingness to pay top dollar for certain types of services.

As the WSJ’s Nathan Koppel wrote back in 2007, a few pioneers had raised their fees to more than $1,000 an hour about five years ago, at the peak of the economic boom. But after the recession hit, many of the rest of the industry’s elite were hesitant, until recently, to charge more than $990 an hour.

While companies have cut legal budgets and continue to push for hourly discounts and capped-fee deals with their law firms, many of them have shown they won’t skimp on some kinds of legal advice, especially in high-stakes situations or when they think a star attorney might resolve their problem faster and more efficiently than a lesser-known talent.

Harvey Miller, a bankruptcy partner at New York-based Weil, Gotshal & Manges, said his firm had an “artificial constraint” limiting top partners’ hourly fee because “$1,000 an hour is a lot of money.” It got rid of the cap after studying filings that showed other lawyers surpassing that barrier by about $50.

Today Miller and some other lawyers at Weil Gotshal ask as much as $1,045 an hour. “The underlying principle is if you can get it, get it,” he said.

That said, firms are having a harder time selling rate hikes on their associates.

“Plenty of clients say to me, ‘I don’t have any problems with your rate,’ ” said William F. Nelson, a Washington-based tax partner at Bingham McCutchen, who commands $1,095 an hour, up from $1,065 last year. “But there is price pressure for associates, especially junior lawyers.

So where’s it all headed? Nowhere but up, say law-firm experts. “A thousand dollars an hour was a choke point for some clients,” said Peter Zeughauser, a consultant to law firms. “I don’t think there will be another significant psychological barrier until rates reach $2,000 an hour, which they will do, probably in five to seven years.”

Work at Home and Make $50 to $1,000 an Hour

Now I know what you’re thinking: earning 1,000 dollars per hour is just hype for a sensational headline.
But the truth is that this sort of hourly wage is very attainable with internet marketing.
Let me give you a real world example:
At one point my flagship website was earning about $2,000 dollars each month. It made this level of earnings for about a year and it had built up to this level making $1,000 for about a year and $600 for about a year before that.
Total earnings from advertising was approximately $40,000 while I was growing the site.
Eventually I sold the site for $200,000 dollars.
The site had about 1 million words and took approximately 250 hours to create (since I publish about 4,000 words per hour).
This equates to an hourly wage of $960 dollars per hour.
Now in all truth, I spent a LOT more than just 250 hours working on the site.
But you know what? Most of that effort was completely wasted.
For example, I spent plenty of time tweaking the theme and appearance of the website. All wasted effort, in my opinion.
At the time, I thought I was making important design decisions. Now I realize that this was not really true, it was just a useful distraction that kept me from producing more content.
Now that I know what I am doing (in terms of building authority websites) I will not waste nearly as much time when I go to build up my next project. This time, I will spend 99 percent of my time creating amazingly good content. The other 1 percent of the time will be spent managing an outsourced link building campaign (I hate building links myself).
Of course, the tough part about all of this is that you don’t get to see most of the money until the very end. I spent 4 years or so working on this flagship website and saw very little income for the first 3 years. I would say that after 2 years it was making a part time income and after 3.5 years it was making a solid full time income. And of course, after 4 years, I sold it off for a very nice chunk of change.
I also do freelance work from home. When I do this, I do not take on new work unless it makes $50 an hour or more. Making less than this per hour does not make much sense, given that I could be making much higher earnings working on my own websites.
Of course, you still have to eat! And if you do not have a passive income stream yet, then you might do well to write some freelance articles for quick cash. If they are really lucky then they can even hire others to manage their business and remove themselves entirely from the equation (ala the 4 hour work week).
With internet marketing and building an authority website, the strategy is similar to this. If you follow the basic plan for building up a huge website, you are going to see very little income for the first year or two. After that, income should rise sharply as you suddenly have age, link juice, quality content, and more measure of authority than what you had two years ago.
The tough part is the 2 year build up time, when you make very little money and the income just slowly trickles in.
For example, I can remember when I was getting about 100 unique visits per day, and some days I would make 5 or even ten dollars with my ads, and on other days I would make nothing. Not a single penny.
And then I would have a few days in a row where I would make decent money each day, and even have a record high of like 14 dollars in one day, and then I would say to myself “well, this is it! I have crossed a line, and now my site is a regular earner!”
Then the next day…..nothing. Back to zero again.
You have to have the mental and emotional toughness to deal with this sort of roller coaster for at least a year or two. Unless you are working almost full time on your website, it is likely going to take at least that long before your site starts earning a regular income every day. Fluctuations are a normal part of the growth process. Everyone experiences this and everyone complains about it, because it is so incredibly frustrating.
So yeah, you can create semi-passive income and have this great business that gives you a ton of financial freedom, but you have to work for free for about 2 years in order to get there.
Are you willing to do that? Most people are not.
Your hourly wage with an authority website
So when I first started my website, the hourly wage was zero. I was making no money at all and in fact I was devoting huge amounts of time to building up a website that–for all I knew–might never make a single penny in income.
For the first year my pay was close to zero dollars per hour.
During the second and third year my hourly “wage” from working on the website was starting to rise quickly. I was generally working on the website between zero and 15 hours a week, yet it was producing between $600 and $1,200 dollars per month in income.
After the third year my hourly wage really took off. I was earning over $2,000 per month from my website, and it did not matter how much I worked on it. I would go for entire months without producing any new articles, and the money kept rolling in.
Because I had built an authority website, I now had a powerful platform from which to generate additional income. For example, if I was to write 3 new articles each day for a month, those articles would likely earn me an additional $50 to $200 per month in additional earnings going forward. Therefore, even though I had already accumulated a healthy “wage” from my business, I continued to add new articles on a regular basis.
Once you have an authority website, it is very easy to raise the income level by adding more content. This is because you have already gained the trust of Google. When you start a new website, you have to slowly build up that trust with Google by waiting for a few years while building lots of backlinks.
After you have built this authority for your site and fought your way to create a healthy backlink profile, that is when you can really start to increase your income by pouring on more quality content. Target new keywords with each article that you write and let your existing authority and link juice carry you to a higher monthly income.
Ultimate freedom
The real question when considering working at home for $50 dollars and up per hour is this: “Can I really hit these sort of numbers?”
Because if you can hit those numbers consistently then you definitely can achieve the ultimate freedom.
I currently work from home and do a mix of freelance work and also building up my own flagship websites. I also sold off my most successful website and let the money from that sale earn interest for me.
My current schedule is…..not really a schedule at all!
I wake up and do whatever work is available for me. Typically I put in 2 hours per day of actual focused writing on the PC.
When I get freelance work at $50/hour, I usually try to put in 4 hour days until I have all of the work completed.
When I run out of freelance work, I simply shift back to building up quality content on my flagship websites. I know that the work that I put in on my authority websites will eventually pay off down the road at a very high hourly rate. It’s work now, money later.
Because I already built one authority website up and sold it for a tidy sum, the amount of work that I have to do is now greatly reduced. If I practice extreme frugality I can even live off of interest without doing any work at all.
But that is not an exciting path for me, and I prefer to keep working and building more successful businesses. I would say my mindset has shifted though, at this point.
I am no longer trying to scrape the internet for pennies or just squeeze a buck out of people. Now it is about creating amazingly good websites that are oozing with quality. I know the payoff will come eventually based on super high quality content. I am not focused on promotion and marketing like I used to be. Now it is all about creating a truly useful and amazing resource for people. I am no longer under time pressure to create fast income so I can take my time and really build things properly.

After the third year my hourly wage really took off. I was earning over $2,000 per month from my website, and it did not matter how much I worked on it. I would go for entire months without producing any new articles, and the money kept rolling in.
Because I had built an authority website, I now had a powerful platform from which to generate additional income. For example, if I was to write 3 new articles each day for a month, those articles would likely earn me an additional $50 to $200 per month in additional earnings going forward. Therefore, even though I had already accumulated a healthy “wage” from my business, I continued to add new articles on a regular basis.
Once you have an authority website, it is very easy to raise the income level by adding more content. This is because you have already gained the trust of Google. When you start a new website, you have to slowly build up that trust with Google by waiting for a few years while building lots of backlinks.
After you have built this authority for your site and fought your way to create a healthy backlink profile, that is when you can really start to increase your income by pouring on more quality content. Target new keywords with each article that you write and let your existing authority and link juice carry you to a higher monthly income.
Ultimate freedom
The real question when considering working at home for $50 dollars and up per hour is this: “Can I really hit these sort of numbers?”
Because if you can hit those numbers consistently then you definitely can achieve the ultimate freedom.
I currently work from home and do a mix of freelance work and also building up my own flagship websites. I also sold off my most successful website and let the money from that sale earn interest for me.
My current schedule is…..not really a schedule at all!
I wake up and do whatever work is available for me. Typically I put in 2 hours per day of actual focused writing on the PC.
When I get freelance work at $50/hour, I usually try to put in 4 hour days until I have all of the work completed.
When I run out of freelance work, I simply shift back to building up quality content on my flagship websites. I know that the work that I put in on my authority websites will eventually pay off down the road at a very high hourly rate. It’s work now, money later.
Because I already built one authority website up and sold it for a tidy sum, the amount of work that I have to do is now greatly reduced. If I practice extreme frugality I can even live off of interest without doing any work at all.
But that is not an exciting path for me, and I prefer to keep working and building more successful businesses. I would say my mindset has shifted though, at this point.
I am no longer trying to scrape the internet for pennies or just squeeze a buck out of people. Now it is about creating amazingly good websites that are oozing with quality. I know the payoff will come eventually based on super high quality content. I am not focused on promotion and marketing like I used to be. Now it is all about creating a truly useful and amazing resource for people. I am no longer under time pressure to create fast income so I can take my time and really build things properly.

Hitting these kind of numbers is not impossible but it does take some effort.
